Liverpool target Xabi Alonso as Arne Slot faces possible summer exit, with Alonso seeking control over recruitment and squad planning

Liverpool Football Club are reportedly preparing for a managerial overhaul, with Xabi Alonso emerging as the club’s preferred successor should current manager Arne Slot depart by summer. The development follows a challenging campaign for the Dutchman, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to German outlet Bild, Alonso, the former Real Madrid manager and Liverpool midfielder, would only accept the role if granted significant influence over recruitment and squad structure.

The Spaniard previously guided Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and is recognised for his tactical clarity and player development.

Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League, retaining a potential Champions League berth despite securing only four points from their last four matches.

Behind the scenes, the club has maintained ongoing contact with Alonso since 2024 through sporting director Michael Edwards, although the Spaniard initially declined amid his commitments in Germany.

The potential rebuild may accelerate with the anticipated departure of Mohamed Salah, who is set to leave at the season’s end after scoring 255 goals in 435 appearances.

Alonso’s arrival could also reunite him with Florian Wirtz, whose creative midfield role flourished under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

Slot has defended his record, highlighting significant investment last summer of around €500 million, offset by over €300 million in player sales, including Luis Diaz. Critics, however, cite difficulties in forging cohesion from the influx of talent.

Alonso, celebrated for his UEFA Champions League win with Liverpool and international successes with Spain, is viewed internally as the ideal figure to steer the next phase of the club’s ambitions.
