UNILAG lecturer rape trial continues as student narrates alleged assault in Lagos court during emotional testimony

A 20-year-old University of Lagos student on Wednesday gave emotional testimony before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, recounting how a 53-year-old lecturer, Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, allegedly assaulted her in his office.

The UNILAG lecturer rape trial is being heard before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, with the Lagos State Government prosecuting Ojogbo on a two-count charge of rape and sexual assault.

The student, who appeared as the first prosecution witness, narrated how the alleged incident occurred on August 22, 2025, at the university’s Akoka campus after she had completed an examination.

She told the court that the lecturer had earlier engaged her during an exam and later invited her to his office for further discussion.

According to her testimony, she attempted to meet him twice before eventually encountering him again on campus, where he instructed her to wait and later led her to his office.

She described the office as isolated and without a secretary, stating that two students briefly entered before being sent away by the defendant.

The student told the court that the situation escalated shortly after, leading to what she described as a forceful sexual assault.

She testified that she left the office in tears and immediately reported the incident to a friend, before escalating the complaint to departmental authorities.

Her account detailed how the matter was reported through university channels, including a lecturer, the head of department, and the institution’s SERVICOM unit.

The witness also said she later underwent medical examinations and reported the case to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency before it was transferred to the police.

She further told the court that attempts were allegedly made by the defendant’s associates to settle the matter outside formal proceedings.

Justice Ogala adjourned the case until April 27, 2026, for cross-examination of the witness as the UNILAG lecturer rape trial continues.
