Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Tuesday when Alhaji Mohammed Idris paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The minister noted that some centres, such as the River State correctional hospital, previously had no medical doctors, while facilities in Kuje are equipped to handle major surgeries but lacked personnel.

“The President understands that he is the President of all Nigerians, including those inmates. And as father to all, he has always shown that he cares,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He also highlighted initiatives to build capacity among inmates through “train the trainer” programmes, conducting skills audits, and empowering graduates to train others.

Tunji-Ojo noted that the Federal Government increased inmate feeding allowances by 50 per cent.

He also outlined security measures in collaboration with other ministries, including the creation of “mine marshals” with the Ministry of Solid Minerals, which has reduced criminality and protected critical assets.

“We want to collaborate more to ensure a coordinated communication strategy that showcases the achievements of the Ministry of Interior,” he added.

The move aims to improve healthcare delivery, enhance inmate welfare, and strengthen national security across correctional facilities.
