Super Eagles enter discussions with NFF for higher AFCON 2025 bonuses following CAF’s prize money increase to $10 million

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have begun discussions with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over demands for increased bonuses ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

According to reports from SCORENigeria, the NFF proposed a performance-based bonus structure that rises as the team progresses through the tournament.

However, the players are reportedly dissatisfied with the current offer and are pushing for a more substantial financial package.

The Super Eagles’ demands follow the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) recent announcement that the 2025 AFCON winners will receive $10 million, a significant increase from the $7 million awarded to defending champions Côte d’Ivoire at the 2023 edition.

Nigeria, who finished runners-up in 2023, collected $4 million.

With higher financial stakes now in play, the players are keen to secure a bonus scheme that reflects the amplified rewards, underlining the importance of adequate compensation for their performance on the continental stage.

Negotiations between the Super Eagles and the NFF remain ongoing, with both parties expected to reach a resolution before the tournament begins.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has declared that sports are a potent tool for instilling discipline, resilience, and leadership in youth. He affirmed this at the 4th Biennial Inter-House Sports Competition of DE-Royal Apple Schools at Agege Sports Stadium on Thursday, April 16.

Obasa, the Special Guest of Honour, was joined by lawmakers Hon. Noheem Adams (Leader of the House), Hon. Ege Adebisi, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Hon. Jubril AbdulKareem, and Hon. Oladele Ajomale. Their presence added colour and prestige to the school’s sporting fiesta, which featured thrilling races, relays, and novelty events.

In his address, the Speaker emphasised the importance of grassroots investment in youth development and encouraged parents to continue supporting their children in both academics and sports.

“When schools combine academics with athletics, they produce well-rounded individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society. This is why we must continue to support initiatives that empower our young people,” he said.

The Speaker also commended all the participants, saying, “Whether you come first, second, or last today, hold your heads high. You are already winners because you have shown courage by stepping onto the field. The future belongs to those who are bold enough to try.”

He applauded the school’s management and staff for organising a successful inter-house sports competition, which he said requires resources, planning, and dedication, adding,

“Today, we are all reaping the fruits of your tireless efforts, and I say a big thank you.”

Mrs. B. T. Obasa, the Managing Director of DE-Royal Apple Schools with branches in Lagos and Ogun States, said that for DE-Royal Apple Schools, the day was more than a sporting contest; it was a celebration of leadership, discipline, and the promise of a brighter future for Lagos State.

“Our vision has always been to raise children who excel both in academics and in character. Sports is one of the ways we instill discipline and teamwork, and we are delighted to see our efforts recognized today,” she said.
