Carrick is currently leading the discussions and may be confirmed in the role within hours.

Both candidates have met with club executives and presented their plans for the team.

Sources tell Sky Sports News that Carrick impressed during the meetings, although Solskjaer’s popularity from his previous tenure remains a consideration.

Darren Fletcher, who has been serving as short-term interim head coach, confirmed after United’s 2–1 FA Cup defeat by Brighton that his agreed period in charge has concluded.

Fletcher is scheduled to report to the Carrington Training Centre on Monday to clarify his role moving forward.

Further discussions will be led by director of football Jason Wilcox, with the club aiming to resolve the situation promptly.

The new interim head coach is expected to take charge in time to prepare the team for Saturday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
