Edo State Special Security Squad investigates the killing of Courage “Dogo” in Benin following a park ticket dispute; firearms recovered and suspects arrested

A man identified as Courage, popularly known as “Dogo,” was reportedly killed at Eboh Quarters, Estate Gate, Irhirhi in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State.

The killing was confirmed by the Secretary of the Edo State Special Security Squad, John Izegaegbe, in a statement issued via the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo.

According to Izegaegbe, the squad received a distress call around 6:13 a.m. on Friday reporting a fatal incident in the community.

Upon arrival, operatives confirmed that the victim had been killed.

Contrary to initial speculation, the incident was not cult-related but arose from a dispute over park ticketing.

“Although the Edo State Government banned certain ticketing operations, the deceased was allegedly involved in illegal ticketing and accused of not sharing proceeds appropriately. This disagreement reportedly led to a conspiracy resulting in his death,” Izegaegbe said.

Preliminary investigations revealed the use of a 9mm Beretta pistol, with cartridges recovered at the scene.

The killing also triggered a reprisal attack at Wire Road, reportedly by individuals who mistakenly believed certain persons were responsible.

Several suspects have been arrested and are providing information that may lead to further arrests.

“The reported killing of Courage, known as Dogo, in Irhirhi led to intensive operations during the weekend. We must stress that it is not a cult killing. Investigations are ongoing,” Izegaegbe added.

During operations, the security team recovered firearms in an abandoned vehicle, including a K2 Army magazine loaded with live ammunition.

All occupants fled, but the vehicle and ammunition were secured.

Reaffirming the state government’s stance against cultism and kidnapping, Izegaegbe assured residents that the Special Security Squad remains committed to maintaining law and order and urged the public to provide timely and credible information.

In a related development, Edo State authorities confirmed ongoing operations to rescue a police officer and his daughter abducted on February 8, along with two other kidnapped individuals in Makeke, Akoko Edo Local Government Area.
