In a statement posted on the African Union’s official X account, Youssouf described the February 21 assault as a “heinous and well-coordinated terrorist attack” that claimed more than 50 civilian lives and resulted in the abduction of several women and children.

“The African Union unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability,” the statement read.

Youssouf expressed solidarity with Nigeria, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

He urged the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children and called for enhanced collaboration and coordinated strategies to protect civilians.

The African Union emphasised that targeting vulnerable populations constitutes severe human rights abuses and undermines regional peace and security.
